R1-9 |
The R-9 class subway cars were the first cars ordered for the new Independent subway that opened in stages during the 1930's. The R1-9 are lumped together as they are nearly identical to each other. The last of these types were retired in the early 1970's. These are the oldest cars I in revenue service while growing up. My brother, sister and I called them "Chocolate Milk" trains when we saw them on the F-Line in Brooklyn while waiting for our Dad to descend the stairs at the Ave I station.
The Transit Museum has a few that are in mint shape, in are running regular excursions on the system.
