Roosevelt Island Tram

Aerial Tram

This tram was built to provide Roosevelt Island residents a connection with Manhattan. The only land connection they have is a bridge to Queens. At one time trolleys crossed the Queensboro Bridge and stopped over the island to pick up passengers for what was then known as Welfare Island. With the opening of the 63rd St subway connection in the 1990's, the tram was made redundant, but residents insisted on keeping it, so it still runs today.
