Dresden, Germany
Florence on the Elbe
To walk in Dresden back in 1999 was like walking in a time machine. This city at that time was undergoing major re-construction since the collapse of the Iron Curtain. Many buildings still looked as if WWII ended a few years ago, but many new buildings are going up. In 2008, many projects are complete making Dresden a very modern, vibrant city. A return visit in 2012 shows the system is vibrant and starting to grow again. A 2024 visit showed continued expansion and modernization.
Dresden maintains a huge traditional streetcar system that is fun to ride. Dresden also maintains a small S-Bahn network, two funiculars and a working narrow gauge steam lines.
