MOTAT

Trams, Trains, Planes & more

Auckland, NZ   (80 photos)

Officially the museum is called The Museum of Transport and Technology Auckland, or MOTAT. It is a very diverse museum. It has aviation, automobiles, farm equipment, a village, steam train, and my big interest in Trams.

I was visiting NZ via a cruise ship. My port day in Auckland happened to be on the same day as Tram Day at the museum. Most of the trams in the collection were operating on the museum mainline linking MOTAT1 and MOTAT2. It was a great day to be there. The trams run along a single-track line with passing sidings. The trip time is about 10~15 minutes. There is a stop at the zoo along the way where you can get-off and re-board.

But there is so much more. At MOTAT1 you will find a recreation of a small town. Homes, stores and a church. An automobile and power museum is fun to walk thru along with farm equipment.

At MOTAT2 you will find the aviation museum and a steam railway. The train only operates once a month.

The museum is in Auckland, near the zoo. It is very accessible by public transport with bus stops right at the entrance.

All photos are from my one and only visit to the museum on March 17th, 2019.
