St. Charles Line |
The oldest continuously operating street railway in the United States. The line was built in 1835 as a sream railway in public streets. The line for formally electrified in 1893. The line was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It was degisnated a National Historic Landmark in 2014.
The line was shutdown after Hurricane Katrina for approximately 2 years. It is the only RTA line to run 24 hours a day post-Katrina and runs with relatively low headways of 6 to 10 minutes during the day, and 20 to 30 minues over night.
The streetcars that operate on the line are the 900 series Perley Thomas series from the 1920's. With the line's historic status, it is exempt from ADA requirements.
The line connects downtown with the Garden District, Uptown, Loyola and Tulane Universitys, and East Carrollton.
