Memphis Trolley

This is the second line that opened in Memphis. The Illinois Central has 2 tracks that ran along Memphis's riverfront. However only 2 daily Amtrak trains and an occasional freight use the line, making 2 track un-necessary. MATA was able to take ownership of the west track on the right-of-way. There is a very rare trolley/RR crossing at the north end where the Riverfront cars come off of Main St. New right-of-way was built on the southern end along public streets to bring the line back to Main St.

The trolley route is entirely single-tracked.  Thus, MATA runs cars in a one way loop. The cars travel southbound along the waterfront and northbound on Main St.
