Pittsburgh is one of a handful of US cities that maintained their streetcars into the Light Rail era. Although the Light Rail system is not nearly as widespread as the former "trolleys" it is still a moden link into Pittsburgh's past.
Despite it being called light rail, many locals still refer to the cars as trolleys.
In the mid-1980's the Port Authority opened the subway in downtown Pittsburgh. This moved the remaining trolleys from the south from the city streets. The Sout lines to Library and South Hills Village were more Interurban like, with a lot of private right-of-way, which made for easy conversion to Light Rail. The last PCCs operated in 1999. In 2012 there was an extension opend to the northside.
Today there are basically 2 routes. The Red Line which runs so Sotuh Hills Village via street median running in Beechwood. The Blue Line runs either to South Hills Village or to Library using the Overbrook Line which is a faster route rebuilt in the mid-2000's.
