US East Transit > Boston > Heavy Rail Lines
Blue Line

boshr02.jpg (39940 bytes)

Boston Subway

The Blue line started as a trolley line connecting East Boston with downtown in 1904. In 1924, the line was converted to heavy rail. 1952 the line was extended east beyond Maverick onto the roadbed of a former narrow gauge railroad of the Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn. A unique feature of this line is the use of third rail from Bowdoin to Airport, then trains switch to overhead catenary for the rest of their journey.
