Southern US Transit > Memphis > Trolley
Madison & Main Junction

Memphis Trolley

This junction a fun to watch Madison cars come off the Madison Line to head north on Main and in reverse.

The Madison double-track ends one block east of Main St. Due to the tight curves this single track splits and connects with the southbound Main St track (west track) in both directions. There are crossovers on either side of this junction on Main Street to put cars on their correct tracks. All the switches here are spring loaded in such a way that cars can flow thru the junction without manually throwing switches. There is no signal protection for this junction other then a normal traffic light.

This is a fun trolley watching spot!

The car to the left is a northbound Main St car. The car to the left is a eastbound Madison car. It has just come from the north, passed Madison and is now stopped to change ends.(9/4/07) This car has changed ends and is now turning onto Madison heading east.(9/4/07)
It has just about cleared the intersection. (9/4/07) The car will soon enter Madison's double-track zone and head out to Cleveland Ave. (9/4/07)
This is a westbound Madison car turning north onto Main St. The car will stop here in the middle of the intersection for passenger drop-off at "Walgreens".(9/4/07) The Madison car, noting if any southbound cars are in the way, will now pull forward to wrong-rail on the southbound Main Street. track. (9/4/07)
The Madison car is now wrong-railing on Main St. (9/4/07) The Madison car continues north on the southbound track with a southbound Main St car waiting. (9/4/07)
The Madison car is now switching to the northbound track to head to the Convention Center, and the southbound Main St Car can continue. (9/4/07)
