San Francisco BART |
The City by the Bay is a wonderful transit city. There is BART, MUNI & Caltrain and SMART!
The modern BART subway system connects Oakland and outlying suburbs to Market St as well as to SFO Airport.
MUNI Metro |
MUNI is the transit agency which operates an array of transit. There are the famous Cable Car lines going over SF's hills. There is the MUNI Metro that operates streetcar style on the west side, then subway style under Market Street (but over BART). There is the F-Market and the E-Embarcadero Streetcar lines that use PCC's, Milan cars and assorted other history streetcars. MUNI operates a vast network of electric trolley buses as well. This makes SF the king of electric transit on the west coast.
SF also has 2 commuter lines. Caltrain, that connects SF with San Jose and Gilroy along the Peninsula. The SMART Train links Sonoma and Marin Counties between San Rafeal and Sonoma County Airport. An extension is underway to connect with the Larkspur Ferry to San Francisco
