Nelson, BC Nelson is a small city of almost 11,000 residents, nestled in Selkirk Mountains along Kootenay Lake. The city had a first generation streetcar system, the small system in the entire British Empire with only 3 cars needed to run the service. The system was shutdown in 1949. Car #23, which was one of the "new" Nelson Cars, built in 1908, and acquired by Nelson in 1924, was not scrapped, but saved and used for various purposes. In 1982 it was acquired by the chamber of commerce and went through a restoration at Selkirk College. In 1992 the car returned to service on newly built track linking Lakeside Park with a hotel near downtown. The Nelson Electric Tramway Society also own a second streetcar, car #400 that originally operated for the BC Electric Railway in Victoria. It is Birney car, but it does not run much as the turning loops on the line are too tight. The streetcar runs during the warmer months 7-days a week at 20 minute headways. Nelson is also served by BC Transit Buses. Click on any image to enlarge. All photos taken in August 2022. |
