Cincinnati Subway that Never Was

The Queen City was destined to be one of the largest cities in the US in the early 1900's. The Miami and Erie Canal ran thru the city, but was abandoned in 1877. Over the years there was talks of draining the canal and converting it ito a subway, with a boulvard running above it. (Newark did in the 1930's).

Construction started in the 1910's but WWI delayed it. Constuction restarted in the 1920's. However the line was over budget and further funding was stopped. The road above was completed, as well as 4 subway stations and a couple above ground stations. No track was ever laid.

Parts of the above ground portion was converted into a freeway. One of the trackways supports a watermain. There is occasionally talk to finish the subway, but that has not happened yet. I have never toured the subway, so below are only the portions that can be seen fround the ouside, except for the Hopple St. tunnel.
