Edmonton is the birthplace of modern light rail
in North America. This small one route system runs in a subway in downtown and
onto the University district on account of the brutal Alberta winters. They use a
version of the Frankfort U2 car, now almost the North American industry standard car.
Edmonton is working on a southward
expansion. The first section brings the line up from the deep University
tunnel up to the surface. Other lines are in the planning stages.
Edmonton maintains 2 vintage streetcar lines, both operated by a
non-profit group. The first line is at Fort Edmonton Park, the other connects
the capitol mall district with Strathcona.
