This railway is a "short-cut" Line branching off
the JR Joetsu line at Echigo-Yuzawa (Shinkansen stop as well) then cuts
southward to the Shin-Etsu line at Naoetsu. It is one of the fastest
non-Shinkansen trains in Japan at 160km/h, on narrow gauge track no-less!
There is Limited Stop express service on the line, that actually doesn't
make any stops on this section running from Echigo-Yuzawa to Kanazawa. It
is expected once the Hokuriku Shinkansen opens towards Toyama and Kanazawa
in 2014, this line's current profitability will most likely suffer.
