Japan
may be a small country land wise, but it is large in trains. There is
still a heavy emphasis on passenger rail transport. The largest rail
system are the JR Lines. JR is actually several different private
companies. At one time these companies formed JNR, the national railroad.
There are also numerous private rail lines. Many are a cross between
mainline and interurban trains. Of course everybody knows Japan for the
famous Bullet trains, or Shinkansen.
For purposes of clarity, JR Tokyo Commuter services
photos are located in the
Tokyo Transit Photos and
the same with
Osaka Commuter
services. JR long distance and special trains remain in this section.
Included are photos of the experimental Maglev line undergoing evaluation
in Yamanashi Prefecture.
